Projects

The Community Council has administered the following grants with noted grantor:

    • 2000 – US Forest Service Formation of a community action team and development of a community action plan.
    • 2001 – US Forest Service Generating conceptual architectural plans for a community center.
    • 2003 – State of Alaska Nikiski Traffic Study
    • 2004 – US Forest Service Improving the cross country trails behind Nikiski High School.
    • 2005 – State of Alaska / Kenai Peninsula Borough Purchase of kitchen equipment for the Nikiski Recreation Community Center.
    • 2008 – State of Alaska MEAP Grant Community improvement projects, including installation of a water well at the Nikiski Community Cemetery, sponsoring community clean-up day, and removal of junk vehicles.
    • 2009 – State of Alaska Community Revenue Sharing Grant Nikiski and Salamatof Community improvement projects, including Nikiski Recreation Community library, giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, Nikiski-North Star Elementary projects, sponsoring community clean-up day, and removal of junk vehicles..
    • 2010 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski and Salamatof Community improvement projects, including: giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, Nikiski-North Star Elementary projects, sponsoring community clean-up day, and removal of junk vehicles..
    • 2011 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski Community improvement projects, including: sponsoring community clean-up day with food and prizes, purchasing a “Welcome to Nikiski” highway sign and obtaining a State Right-of-Way permit for installation at the intersection of the Spur Hwy and South Miller Loop, and removal of junk vehicles. for the 4th consecutive year.
    • 2012 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski Community improvement projects, including: giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, purchasing Nikiski High School wrestling mats, giving 4 Nikiski High School graduating seniors scholarships, sponsoring community clean-up day with highway shirts and vests, sponsorship in the Nikiski Health Fair, installation of the Welcome to Nikiski highway sign, and hosting the Nikiski Area Plan Update Forum.
    • 2013 – State of Alaska Nikiski Beautification Grant – 13-DC-158 – The Community Council was awarded a State grant of $100,000 for the collection and disposal of junk vehicles to be administered over 5 years. The Council is in the early stages of grant planning.  Note – This grant was terminated  in 2015 and remaining funds reallocated for Cook Inlet Public Viewing and Beach Access Park purchase.
    • 2013 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski Community improvement projects, including: including: giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, giving 10 Nikiski High School graduating seniors scholarships, sponsoring community clean-up day with highway shirts and vests, sponsorship in the Nikiski Family Sun Day, sponsoring the Nikiski Freestyle wrestlers, supporting the NHS and NES nurses fund, supporting the 4-H equestrian program, sponsoring the Nikiski Night Lights program, giving NSH graduating seniors backpacks, and supporting the NHS football team.
    • 2014 – State of Alaska Grant – 14-RR-047 – Nikiski Cook Inlet Viewing and Beach Access Park – The council was successful in receiving a $100,000 grant for the purchase of park property for a beach access and public Cook Inlet viewing park.
    • 2014 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski Community improvement projects, including:  giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, giving 3 Nikiski High School graduating seniors scholarships, sponsoring community clean-up day, sponsoring the Nikiski Freestyle wrestlers, supporting the NHS and NES nurses fund, sponsoring the Nikiski Night Lights program, giving NSH graduating seniors backpacks, and sponsoring a Nikiski area talent show.
    • 2015 – State of Alaska Grant – 15-CD-448 – Nikiski Cook Inlet Viewing and Beach Access Park – The council was successful in receiving a $150,000 grant for the purchase of park property for a beach access and public Cook Inlet viewing park.
    • 2015 – State of Alaska Grant – 15-DC-449 – Nikiski Cook Inlet Viewing and Beach Access Park – The council was successful in receiving a $150,000 grant for the purchase of park property for a beach access and public Cook Inlet viewing park.
    • 2015 – State of Alaska Grant – 15-RR-034 – Nikiski Cook Inlet Viewing and Beach Access Park – The council was successful in re-allocating the 13-DC-158 grant remaining funds of $99,519 towards the purchase of park property for a beach access and public Cook Inlet viewing park.
    • 2015 – State of Alaska CRS Grant Nikiski Community improvement projects, including:  giving to Nikiski Neighbors for outreach programs, giving 6 Nikiski High School graduating seniors scholarships, sponsoring community clean-up day, sponsoring the Nikiski Freestyle wrestlers, supporting the NHS and NES nurses fund, sponsoring the Nikiski Night Lights program, sponsoring the NSH graduating seniors graduation, and sponsoring  Nikiski foster kids in the Royal Family Kids program.

In addition to the above grants, the Nikiski Community Council annually submits projects for State of Alaska funding. The Council has been successful in obtaining funds supporting several community projects, which are administered by others. The Nikiska Bay Utilities, the water utility company in Nikiski, received 2 large State grants  in 2007 and 2008 for equipment upgrades and system improvements. The Council is asking for funds to build a community park overlooking Cook Inlet with beach access.
